As both a Doctor Who and a Heroes fan, I was excited to see that one of the campaigns for the new series of Heroes is specifically targeting Doctor Who

Torchwood sets record for BBC America

Apparently Torchwood sets record for BBC America - this doesn't actually surprise me, since I think it's also been one of the most heavily promoted BBC America shows in quite a while. But it's still a good thing -- not just for Torchwood, but the Doctor Who "family" in the US generally.

The Adventures of Mini-Dcctor

The Adventures of Mini-Dcctor shows a recent trip of the Doctor's in Japan, visiting Madame du Pompadour and Worldcon.

It's even more the Doctor Who channel than I thought...

The episode of Graham Norton tonight that airs after the first episode of Torchwood on BBC America is an episode with David Tennant.

The airing of The Christmas Invasion tonight was hacked to bits though, to fit into an hour time slot with commercials. I mean, even The Song For Ten sequence was cut -- though at the same time, it's all easily enough obtainable in a complete form on DVD.

I think it is worth pointing out how much BBC America is promoting the US premiere of Torchwood -- and the start of the first David Tennant series on the channel as well.

I've definitely felt that Doctor Who's profile in the US has gone up over the last year -- there are people that have become new fans, as opposed to those of us that have been Doctor Who fans for decades.

The thing is, Doctor Who is massive now in the UK -- and it's certainly not as massive here in the US that it is there. But Who is by far one of the biggest continuing series that is imported into the US, and I think BBC America has high expectations for Torchwood in raising the profile of their network.

My impression is that it's some of the old-school Doctor Who fans that like Torchwood the least -- but at the same time, many people that have come into Doctor Who since 2005 -- and even some that didn't like Who in any format -- seem to really like Torchwood

The Future of Doctor Who is Secure

We've seen a little bit of a panic in some quarters as the BBC announces the future of Doctor Who.

But this shows a nice, solid, long-term commitment to Doctor Who -- I believe that we're now sitting very comfortably for a very solid position to be celebrating the series 50th anniversary in positive style in 2013. We don't know what the production team of 2010 will be like -- and that's several years away -- but Doctor Who isn't going away at all, with nearly as much in 2009 as there was in 1989 -- and a nice long term future.
